Hello Friends!
I was born with a cleft lip/palette and had several surgeries as an infant and a teenager. It was actually so bad that the doctors believed I would end up with a very bad lisp and a speech impediment. Luckily, that wasn't the case. I truly believe that my parent's love for music is what helped with my speech and saved me from developing a lisp and impediment. Not one day went by in our house where the radio wasn't playing something and as soon as we would leave the house the radio in the car came on.
I was the teen who was raised in the mid 90s' wearing the bell bottom jeans and the baby doll crop tops. I know a lot of people thought I was weird but it's alright. (HaHa)
You probably just read that and said to yourself what does this have to do with music.
Let's see here, I think I was obviously raised during the wrong musical era.
I am completely in love with music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I was raised on all of it. I'm the youngest of six children and my parents never really changed the type of music they listened to when they were teens in the 60's.
I was the type of kid who would stand on the table holding a wooden spoon belting out the tune to every single song from Diana Ross and the Supremes. To this day, I kinda still do, except stand on the table of course. My love of music runs incredibly deep. I feel it's a necessity in everyday life. At one point in my life, I auditioned for a group that toured the United States and I made it. So not only did I love it, I was good at it. Music is almost a sort of therapy to me. It helps so much with your mood, especially if you are feeling down. Just pop on some tunes and you're immediately feeling better.
I believe the love of music does trickle down to your kids, especially what types they like. Believe me, some of our kids listen to the new stuff like Cardi B and Ghost (I HAVE NO IDEA WHY), but they also really enjoy the same types of music that I do. Music is so important in children's lives whether they are playing it with an instrument or singing. If children are playing an instrument, it helps them immensely with hand, eye coordination and it gives them something to focus on if they are easily disengaged in normal activities. Most importantly, developing a musical skill promotes accomplishments. If your children sing, it helps them with their speech and trains them to enunciate properly, which is what helped me as a child.
So, if you love music as much as I do, just know that you're not alone and be sure to try to pass it on to your kids.
Gotta go Al Green is calling for me!!!
